Over 22K IPL fans used Namma Metro for season opener

SLUG: SMART TRAVEL

BENGALURU

Bengaluru witnessed a major success in public transport management during the IPL 2026 opening match, as thousands of cricket fans shifted to Namma Metro, setting a new benchmark for match-day travel.

During the match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, more than 22,000 passengers used Metro services, over twice the usual 8,000 to 10,000 commuters seen on regular days. The sharp rise in ridership came as a result of a special initiative introduced by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited in coordination with Bengaluru City Police, Greater Bengaluru Authority, Karnataka State Cricket Association, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

A key highlight of this initiative was the integration of IPL match tickets with Metro QR codes. This allowed fans to travel free of cost from any station to Cubbon Park Metro Station or MG Road Metro Station and return after the match without purchasing separate tickets.

The move significantly eased pressure on Bengaluru’s Central Business District, bringing down both traffic congestion and parking demand. Commuters were encouraged to park their vehicles at nearby Metro stations and continue their journey by train. Parking charges remained unchanged at Rs. 30 for two-wheelers and Rs 60 for four-wheelers, making the park-and-ride option convenient and affordable.

To handle the surge, special arrangements were put in place at Cubbon Park and MG Road stations to guide fans smoothly towards stadium entry gates. Awareness campaigns, including station displays, direct communication with smart card users, and promotional boards, played a crucial role in informing the public about the facility.

After the match, crowd dispersal was handled efficiently. Around 22,000 passengers were cleared within just 50 minutes, between 11:05 pm and 11:55 pm. This was made possible by pre-positioning trains and running additional services at intervals of three minutes.

During this period, 13 trains operated towards Kempegowda Metro Station (Majestic) and nine towards Whitefield from Cubbon Park station. In total, 39 round trips were conducted, 18 on the Purple Line, 15 on the Green Line, and six on the Yellow Line. The last services were extended, with trains departing Majestic at 1.45 am and from RV Road at 2,05 am.

The entire operation saw disciplined crowd behaviour, ensuring smooth and safe movement across stations. Based on feedback from ground staff and authorities, plans are already in place to further enhance facilities and crowd management systems for upcoming matches.

With its success, Metro travel is now being strongly encouraged for future IPL matches and other large events across Bengaluru, including venues like Bangalore International Exhibition Centre, Karnataka Trade Promotion Organization, and Whitefield, to ensure hassle-free and congestion-free travel.
