Controversy erupted in the Pakistan Super League after Fakhar Zaman of Lahore Qalandars was charged with ball-tampering during a crucial match against Karachi Kings at Gaddafi Stadium.
The incident occurred in the closing stages of the match when Karachi Kings required 14 runs off the final over. Umpires ruled that the condition of the ball had been unlawfully altered, resulting in five penalty runs being awarded to Karachi. The decision significantly shifted momentum, reducing the target and allowing the Kings to chase down the remaining runs with ease.
According to a PSL statement, Fakhar was found to have breached Article 41.3 of the playing conditions, which prohibits any action that changes the condition of the ball. The ball was subsequently replaced at the request of Karachi Kings before the final runs were completed.
However, Fakhar has denied the allegation. During a disciplinary hearing conducted by match referee Roshan Mahanama, the Pakistan international contested the charge, maintaining his innocence. The league confirmed that a follow-up hearing will take place within 48 hours, after which a final decision will be announced.
If found guilty, Fakhar could face sanctions ranging from fines to suspension, including the possibility of missing at least one PSL match. The franchise itself could also face penalties depending on the outcome of the investigation.
Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Afridi said the team would review footage of the incident before drawing conclusions. “We will check the cameras and discuss it internally,” he said after the match.
The episode has once again brought the spotlight on ball-tampering controversies in cricket, raising concerns over fair play and adherence to rules in high-pressure situations. With the league awaiting the referee’s verdict, the incident has added an unexpected layer of drama to the ongoing PSL season.
