Allegations of illegal liquor sales near the revered Shaktidevi Yellamma Gudda shrine in North Karnataka have sparked outrage among devotees, raising serious concerns about enforcement and sanctity of the holy site. The issue of illicit liquor sales in the vicinity of the Yellamma temple, particularly in the Savadatti region of Belagavi district, has drawn widespread attention. Devotees and local residents have alleged that despite restrictions, liquor is being sold secretly in shops near the shrine, often at inflated prices.
According to sources, several shops that appear to sell soft drinks and other regular items are reportedly involved in illegal liquor trade. Customers who inquire discreetly are allegedly being offered liquor, pointing to an organized and covert network operating in the area. This has led to growing anger among devotees, who believe that such activities are tarnishing the reputation and sanctity of the religious site.
The Sri Renuka Yellamma Development Authority had earlier issued strict orders banning the sale of liquor within a three-kilometer radius of the temple. The directive was aimed at preserving the spiritual atmosphere of the shrine and preventing activities deemed inappropriate in a sacred zone. However, locals claim that the order is being openly violated, with little to no action taken against offenders.
Residents and devotees have questioned the role of the excise department and the police, alleging that authorities may be aware of the illegal activities but have failed to take decisive action. The continued operation of such activities has raised suspicions of negligence or possible complicity.
The situation has sparked demands for immediate intervention by higher authorities to crack down on illegal liquor sales and ensure strict enforcement of existing regulations. Devotees have emphasized that maintaining the dignity and sanctity of the temple should be a top priority for the administration.
As concerns continue to grow, citizens are urging the district administration to conduct thorough inspections, take strict legal action against violators, and restore the spiritual environment of one of North Karnataka’s most significant religious centers.
