Mahavir Jayanti Observed Amid Ongoing Protest against Baldota Project

Koppal
Members of a protest forum in Koppal marked Mahavir Jayanti while continuing their agitation against the proposed establishment and expansion of industries linked to the Baldota group, as the indefinite protest entered its 151st day.
The demonstration, organized jointly by the District Bachao Movement Committee and the Environmental Protection Forum, has been ongoing in front of the city municipal office. Protesters gathered to commemorate Mahavir Jayanti, highlighting the principles of non-violence, truth, and restraint associated with the Jain spiritual leader. The occasion was used to reinforce their opposition to industrial projects, which they claim could negatively impact the lives of thousands of local residents.

Retired principal Allamaprabhu Bettadur addressed the gathering, expressing concern over what he described as a contradiction between the values of non-violence upheld by the Jain community and the actions of those supporting the industrial expansion. He stated that it was deeply regrettable that such projects were being pursued despite prolonged opposition from the local population.

Speakers at the event emphasized that the protest has been ongoing for over five months, reflecting the determination of residents to safeguard their environment and livelihoods. They argued that the establishment and expansion of industrial units in the region could pose serious threats to ecological balance and public health.

The protest forum reiterated that their movement is rooted in peaceful resistance, drawing inspiration from the teachings of Mahavir, who advocated non-violence and ethical living. Participants called for greater dialogue and urged authorities and stakeholders to reconsider the proposed developments in light of public concerns.

The gathering concluded with a collective appeal for wisdom and understanding among decision-makers, stressing the need to prioritize sustainable development and community welfare over industrial interests.
