Cricket returned to M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, blending sport and solemn tribute to eleven fans lost last year.
Bengaluru
Cricket returned to the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium last night, but the atmosphere was defined by memory as much as sport. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru took the field against Sunrisers Hyderabad wearing black armbands, a solemn tribute to the eleven fans who tragically lost their lives during last year’s title celebrations.
The June 2025 stampede left a deep scar on the city, leading to a long suspension of matches at the iconic venue. To ensure the victims are never forgotten, the team wore warm-up jerseys featuring the number eleven, and eleven stadium seats have been retired permanently, remaining empty as a silent memorial.
The path to reopening the gates was rigorous. Following the tragedy, the stadium missed hosting major events like the Women’s ODI World Cup. It only received the green light to host the IPL after a government expert committee, led by Maheshwar Rao, enforced strict new safety protocols. Under the guidance of KSCA Vice President Sujit Somsundar, the stadium underwent massive upgrades, including widened exit gates, better emergency facilities, and tighter coordination with fire and medical teams.
With these heightened safety standards now firmly in place, the stadium has been cleared to host its full capacity of 33,000 spectators once again. While the roar of the “RCB” chant has returned to Bengaluru, the quiet tribute of the black armbands serves as a reminder that the fans remain the true heart of the franchise’s journey.
