Lahore
Pakistan’s star pacer Naseem Shah is in hot water with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after a controversial social media post aimed at Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The board officially issued a show-cause notice to the 23-year-old, alleging a serious breach of his central contract and the organization’s media policy.
The sparks flew during the opening night of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 at Gaddafi Stadium. While the tournament is being held behind closed doors due to a regional fuel crisis and the West Asia conflict, Maryam Nawaz was seen arriving with a massive security convoy and receiving high-level protocol.
Reacting to a video of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi greeting the Chief Minister, a post from Naseem’s official X account asked:
“Why is she treated like the Queen at Lord’s?”
The post was deleted within five minutes, followed by a claim that Naseem’s account had been hacked. However, the PCB remains unconvinced by the explanation. The board’s notice cites Clause 2.23 of the Code of Conduct, which strictly prohibits players from making public criticisms or inappropriate comments regarding board officials, policies, or government dignitaries.
A Tense Backdrop for PSL 2026
The controversy adds another layer of drama to a PSL season already struggling with external pressures:
- Fuel Crisis: Matches are being played without spectators to conserve resources amidst ongoing regional tensions.
- Security Threats: Militant group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar recently warned foreign players to withdraw, though stars like David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne have continued to play under “presidential-level” security.
- Venue Restrictions: The tournament has been restricted to just Lahore and Karachi, with the stadium in Peshawar (recently renamed Imran Khan Stadium) labeled a “Do Not Travel” zone by international governments.
Despite the ongoing disciplinary proceedings, Naseem is currently in the lineup for the Rawalpindi Pindiz and is expected to play in their fixture tonight against Peshawar Zalmi while the board awaits his formal response.
