Missing aid sailboats bound for Cuba found safe: Mexican Navy

Mexico
Two sailboats carrying humanitarian aid from Mexico to Cuba have been located by the Mexican Navy, with all crew members reported safe after briefly going missing during their voyage.
The vessels were part of the Nuestra America Convoy, a grassroots humanitarian initiative aimed at delivering essential supplies to Cuba amid ongoing economic challenges and shortages. The boats had departed from Isla Mujeres last Saturday and were expected to reach Havana between March 24 and 25. However, they lost contact during the journey, sparking concern among organizers and authorities.

According to a spokesperson for the convoy, the Mexican Navy successfully located both sailboats, and all crew members were confirmed safe. The vessels have since resumed their journey and are continuing toward Havana to complete their mission. The convoy is carrying food, medicine, baby formula, and other critical supplies intended to support Cuban communities facing shortages.

The Nuestra America Convoy is part of a broader effort to address the humanitarian impact of longstanding restrictions on shipments to Cuba, including limitations tied to policies of the United States. These restrictions have contributed to fuel shortages, frequent power outages, and the rationing of essential services across the island.

Confusion initially surrounded the status of the missing boats. The United States Coast Guard had earlier indicated that the vessels had been found, but later retracted the statement, saying that search efforts were still ongoing. This contradictory information led to uncertainty before the Mexican Navy ultimately confirmed the boats’ safe recovery.

While the reason for the temporary disappearance remains unclear, the successful location of the vessels has reassured organizers and supporters of the mission. The convoy continues to emphasize its commitment to delivering urgently needed humanitarian aid to the Cuban population, highlighting the role of grassroots initiatives in addressing global crises.
