Mamata Banerjee blames BJP and transferred officers for Raghunathganj violence during Ram Navami procession clashes.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday asked the Opposition not to hold her responsible for the violence in Raghunathganj during Ram Navami. Addressing a rally in Paschim Bardhaman, she said her powers were reduced after the transfer of police officers ahead of elections.
Banerjee alleged that officers moved by the Election Commission of India were involved in instigating riots. She claimed shops were vandalised and questioned who gave permission for such acts. She warned that those responsible would be held accountable.
She also highlighted that Trinamool Congress leaders celebrate festivals of all religions together, including Ram Navami, Durga Puja, Eid, and Christmas, promoting unity among communities.
The clash took place in Raghunathganj in Murshidabad during a Ram Navami procession, where violence spread across three locations. Incidents of vandalism, looting, and arson were reported, leaving several people injured.
Security forces, including central teams, were deployed to control the situation. DIG Ajit Singh Yadav said the situation is now under control, with traffic restored. He added that CCTV footage is being used to identify those involved, and strict action will follow.
West Bengal Assembly elections will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting scheduled for May 4.
