International tennis returns to Tumakuru after decades

Tumakuru

After a twenty-year wait, international tennis is finally returning to the heart of Karnataka. Home Minister G. Parameshwara officially sparked the excitement by unveiling the logo for the upcoming ITF Women’s World Tennis Tour W35 Tournament, scheduled to hit the courts this May.

The prestigious event will run from May 4 to May 10 at the Tumkur District Tennis Stadium, located within the scenic Tumkur University campus. As part of the global International Tennis Federation circuit, the tournament offers a significant prize pool of USD 30,000. More importantly, it provides athletes with vital ranking points needed to climb the professional ladder toward the elite WTA Tour.

Minister Parameshwara emphasized that bringing world-class sports to cities beyond Bengaluru is a game-changer. He noted that hosting the event in Tumkur will inspire local youth, particularly young girls, to pick up a racket and dream big. By moving the spotlight away from major hubs, the region hopes to foster a fresh sports culture and prove it can handle global pressure.

The week-long competition will feature intense singles, doubles, and qualifying matches, drawing talented players from across the globe to the city. Local officials, including Subha Kalyan, are working around the clock to ensure the facilities are world-class. With preparations in full swing, Tumakuru is ready to transform into a tennis hotspot, showcasing its growing infrastructure to a global audience while reviving a long-lost sporting legacy for its residents.
