Illegal basement parking violations trigger public outrage

VIJAYAPURA

Citizens of Vijayapura are expressing rising anger over widespread violations of building regulations, as basement areas meant for parking are being illegally converted into commercial shops in key parts of the city. The violations have highlighted serious lapses by the Vijayapura Mahanagara Palike, which faces heavy criticism for failing to enforce rules and safeguard public interest.

Commercial hubs such as BLDEA Road, Ram Mandir Road, and 12 Kamaan Road have emerged as major hotspots. Reports say several shopping complexes operate full-fledged businesses in basement areas, ignoring regulations that reserve these spaces for vehicle parking. The lack of designated parking has forced motorists to use narrow roads, causing frequent traffic jams, delays, and accidents. Pedestrians, including senior citizens, schoolchildren, and women, are also at risk as footpaths are blocked, forcing them onto busy streets.

Residents accuse commercial complex owners of prioritizing profits over public safety. At the same time, the Mahanagara Palike has been blamed for negligence, weak enforcement, and inaction despite repeated complaints. Urban planning experts warn that misuse of basement parking threatens long-term infrastructure and could lead to serious traffic crises if unchecked.

The public demands strict intervention, including inspections of all commercial complexes, sealing of illegal basement shops, heavy penalties, and accountability for officials who failed to act. Citizens have made it clear that immediate action and transparency are needed to prevent Vijayapura from sliding into a severe urban disorder, as both safety and civic discipline remain at stake.
