Cricket legend Irfan Pathan believes a historic changing of the guard is finally approaching at Chennai Super Kings. It’s come to notice that the former pacer identified Sanju Samson as the perfect player to inherit the “baton” from MS Dhoni. With Dhoni’s career likely entering its final chapter, Pathan argues that Samson’s arrival at CSK marks a new era for the five-time champions.
Samson joins Chennai this season following a spectacular run as the Player of the Tournament in India’s 2026 T20 World Cup victory. Pathan noted that Samson isn’t just a world-class wicketkeeper-batter; he is a figure fans can genuinely connect with. “You can build your team around him,” Pathan stated, suggesting that Dhoni is finally ready to pass on his legacy to someone with the caliber to lead the franchise into the future.
The discussion also touched on Dhoni’s evolving role. In recent years, a knee injury and age have seen the “Captain Cool” slide down the batting order to play as a two-over finisher. However, Pathan urged the veteran to take more responsibility this season, suggesting he should bat for at least four or five overs to truly benefit the team. He noted that the days of Dhoni easily finishing every game are fading, making Samson’s presence even more vital.
