Indian football fans are venting their fury after a “disrespectful” administrative blunder left the national team locked out of their own stadium. The head coach Khalid Jamil and several players were reportedly denied entry to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. The standoff, fueled by a financial dispute, forced the cancellation of a scheduled pre-match press conference and ignited a firestorm of criticism across social media.
The chaos stems from a disagreement between the Kerala Football Association and the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA). Reports indicate the GCDA demanded a security deposit of nearly ₹25 lakh plus rent before allowing access. While the local association pleaded for more time, officials stood firm, turning away the national heroes at the gates. Passionate fans in Kerala, known for their deep love of the sport, labeled the incident a “national disgrace” and a “shameful” blow to India’s sporting pride.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) eventually stepped in to calm the waters, confirming that the upcoming AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong will proceed as scheduled. The AIFF expressed confidence that all “formalities” would be resolved before the match operations team takes control of the venue on March 29.
Though the match serves only as preparation since India is already out of the 2027 Asian Cup running, fans argue the damage is done. For many, this logistical nightmare is a “new low” that highlights the deep-rooted administrative lapses hindering the growth of the sport in India.
