Karnataka Orders Action to Reclaim 444 Acres of Forest Land from Air Force

Bengaluru
In a significant move to protect forest land, Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has issued written instructions to initiate action for reclaiming 444 acres of forest land in Bengaluru North taluk. The land, located in Jarakabande Kaval, is currently under the possession of the Indian Air Force. According to official directives, the minister has instructed the department to begin proceedings under Section 64A of the Karnataka Forest Act, 1963, to take back the land. He has communicated separate instructions to the Additional Chief Secretary of the concerned department, emphasizing the urgency of the matter.

The land in question, measuring over 444 acres, was originally part of a larger allocation of approximately 452 acres granted to the Indian Air Force. However, the state government had cancelled this allotment on October 9, 2017, with the intention of preserving the area as a vital ecological zone and green lung for the city.

Despite the cancellation, it has been alleged that the Indian Air Force continued to use the land without complying with legal requirements. The minister pointed out that after the cancellation, the Air Force was required to apply under the provisions of the Forest Conservation Act 1980 and seek alternative land through due process. However, this procedure was reportedly not followed, leading to violations of forest regulations.

As part of the enforcement process, officials have been directed to issue notices under Section 64A and proceed with eviction of the encroachment. The minister also clarified that the Air Force has no legal claim over the land following the cancellation of the allotment.

Furthermore, strict instructions have been issued that any future infrastructure development in the area must receive prior approval from the forest department through the Parivesh portal, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. Departments across the state will also be notified to prevent unauthorized use of forest land.

The move underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding forest resources and maintaining ecological balance amid increasing urbanization pressures in Bengaluru.
