In a disturbing incident near Bengaluru, five young men have been arrested for allegedly robbing engineering students to finance a birthday celebration. The arrests were carried out by the Doddaballapur Rural Police Station after a complaint was filed by the victims.
According to police officials, the accused have been identified as Munegowda, Anand, Gagan, Tilak, and Akash. The group reportedly carried out the robbery near GITAM University situated in Nagadevanahalli, under the jurisdiction of Doddaballapur in Bengaluru Rural district. The accused allegedly targeted engineering students in the area, threatening and assaulting them before extorting money.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims, who are Bachelor of Engineering students, were intercepted by the accused near the university. The attackers intimidated them and physically assaulted them, creating fear and forcing them to hand over money. In a concerning detail, the accused reportedly used digital payment platforms such as PhonePe to transfer money directly from the victims’ accounts, highlighting a growing trend of tech-enabled crimes.

Police sources stated that the motive behind the crime was to arrange funds for Anand’s birthday party. The group allegedly planned the act in advance, identifying students as easy targets. This revelation has raised concerns over rising incidents of petty crimes being committed for trivial reasons.

Following the incident, the injured students approached the police and lodged a formal complaint. Based on their statement, a case was registered, and a swift investigation was launched. The police team acted promptly, tracing the accused and arresting all five individuals involved in the crime. They are currently being interrogated to determine whether they have been involved in similar offenses in the past.

Authorities have assured that strict legal action will be taken against the accused. Meanwhile, police have urged students, especially those living away from home, to remain alert and avoid isolated areas, particularly during late hours. The incident serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and responsible behavior among youth.
