Raichur
With road accidents increasing alarmingly in the city, the Raichur District Traders’ Association has demanded the construction of a ring road to ease traffic congestion and enhance road safety. Association President S. Kamal Kumar raised the issue during a press conference.
He revealed that a total of 2,636 accident cases have been reported on major roads in the district over the past three years, resulting in 886 deaths. Terming the situation “deeply concerning,” he said Raichur is fast turning into an accident-prone city, posing a serious threat to public safety.
Raichur, being a key commercial hub where five national and state highways converge, is witnessing heavy movement of goods vehicles through the city due to the absence of an outer ring road. This has led to severe traffic congestion and a rise in accidents.
The association also demanded the development of a four-lane road from Shaktinagar to Ganj Circle, highlighting that accident rates are particularly high on stretches such as 7th Mile to Raichur, Shaktinagar–Raichur, Yeragera–Raichur, and Ganj Circle to Station Road. Pedestrians and students are among the most affected, he noted.
Further, the association urged authorities to shift the railway goods shed from the city railway station to Yaramaras. Currently located amidst schools, colleges, and hospitals, the goods shed results in the movement of hundreds of heavy vehicles daily, creating hazardous conditions.
Stating that the demand has been pending for over three decades, the association pointed out that railway officials have already inspected Yaramaras as an alternative site. Immediate steps must be taken to reduce traffic congestion and prevent further loss of lives, they urged. Office-bearers of the association appealed to both state and central governments to act urgently, warning that continued neglect of infrastructure could lead to more fatalities.
