Protest in Dharwad Against Rumours of Fuel and Gas Shortage

Slug: Dharwad fuel rumours

Dharwad
Members of the Karnataka Voice Organisation staged a protest in Dharwad on Thursday, demanding strict action against those spreading rumours about shortages of gas cylinders, petrol, and diesel. The demonstration was held in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office amid growing public concern over misinformation. The protest comes at a time when rumours regarding the unavailability of essential fuels have begun circulating widely, creating anxiety among residents. Demonstrators alleged that certain individuals were deliberately spreading false information to mislead the public and create unnecessary panic, especially in the wake of global tensions such as the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict.

Protesters stated that misleading messages claiming shortages of LPG cylinders, petrol, and diesel in Dharwad district were baseless and intended to disrupt normal life. They warned that such rumours could lead to panic buying, long queues at fuel stations, and artificial shortages, even when supplies remain adequate.

Raising concerns over consumer rights, the organisation emphasised that it is illegal for gas agencies and petrol pumps to sell fuel or cylinders at prices higher than those fixed by the government. The protesters urged the district administration to strictly monitor such activities and take immediate legal action against those found violating pricing regulations or spreading false information.

Members of the organisation also called for increased awareness among citizens, urging people not to believe unverified news circulating on social media platforms. They stressed that relying on official sources is crucial to prevent confusion and maintain public order during sensitive times.

Prominent participants, including Karthik Nayak and Lokesh Megeri, addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of responsible communication. They appealed to authorities to identify those responsible for spreading rumours and ensure that strict penalties are imposed to deter such actions in the future.

The protest concluded peacefully, with a memorandum submitted to the district administration. Protesters reiterated their demand for transparency in fuel supply and pricing, along with firm action against misinformation, to safeguard public confidence and prevent unnecessary disruption in everyday life.
