SUVA
India and Fiji are planting the seeds for a deeper partnership, focusing on agriculture and modern technology. India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, met with Fiji’s Agriculture Minister, Tomasi Tunabuna, to discuss new ways the two nations can work together to grow more food and train workers.
The meeting in Suva is part of a month-long push to strengthen the “strong and growing” bond between the two countries. Beyond farming and sugar production, the officials talked about “capacity building”—a fancy way of saying they want to share skills and knowledge to help people in both nations succeed.
This wasn’t an isolated talk. Throughout March, Indian officials have been busy meeting with various leaders in Fiji to discuss everything from climate change and waste management to digital communications. Earlier this month, discussions even touched on “development finance,” looking for ways to invest in sustainable businesses that help the economy grow without hurting the planet.
The relationship between India and Fiji is built on deep cultural roots and mutual respect. Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit in 2014, the partnership has shifted into high gear. India is playing a key role in helping Fiji build its national infrastructure and digital systems. By working together on basic needs like farming while also eyeing a high-tech future, both nations are ensuring their friendship delivers real benefits for their citizens.
