New IPL rules restrict practice sessions, enforce discipline, standardise team operations
New Delhi
Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a fresh set of regulations for franchises ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, aiming to streamline operations and maintain uniform standards across teams.
The upcoming edition of the league, beginning March 28, will see defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in the opening match, setting the stage for another high-profile season.
One of the most significant changes is the restriction on practice sessions on match days. Teams will not be allowed to train or conduct fitness drills on the main square when matches are scheduled. This move is intended to preserve pitch conditions and ensure fairness for both competing sides. On non-match days, franchises will be granted limited access to practice facilities, including two nets in designated areas and one side wicket for range hitting. Open nets, however, will not be permitted under the revised guidelines.
In a bid to maintain professionalism, the BCCI has also enforced a stricter dress code during post-match presentations. Players will no longer be allowed to wear floppy hats or sleeveless jerseys during official interactions. A first violation will result in a warning, while repeated breaches could lead to financial penalties, underlining the board’s intent to uphold discipline and presentation standards.
Another notable directive mandates that all players must travel using team buses throughout the tournament. While teams may deploy multiple buses depending on squad size, individual travel arrangements have been disallowed. The rule is aimed at ensuring security, coordination and logistical efficiency during the competition.
Franchises have been instructed to strictly adhere to these new norms as the league prepares for kickoff. The changes reflect the BCCI’s continued efforts to enhance operational consistency and professionalism in one of the world’s most popular T20 leagues, ensuring a smoother and more organised tournament for players, officials and fans alike.
