Bangladesh honors martyrs on 56th I-Day

DHAKA

Bangladesh paused to remember its heroes as President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman led the nation in celebrating its 56th Independence Day.

The leaders laid wreaths at the National Memorial, honoring the millions who sacrificed their lives during the 1971 Liberation War.

The day carries deep emotional weight, marking the start of the 1971 struggle after a brutal crackdown by Pakistani forces. The nine-month war eventually led to a sovereign Bangladesh, but at a staggering cost of three million lives. During the ceremony, both leaders observed a moment of silence and signed the memorial’s visitors’ book, while PM Rahman urged citizens to unite to build a “prosperous and dignified” future.

However, the celebrations come amid a heated political debate over the nation’s identity. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has publicly criticized the previous interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. She claimed that during his tenure, trials for war criminals were paused and some convicted individuals were even released or given political power. She described these moves as an “attack on the spirit” of the original freedom fight and a distortion of history.

Despite these political tensions, the streets of Dhaka remained filled with patriotic pride. Prime Minister Rahman called on all citizens to draw inspiration from the bravery of 1971 to overcome modern challenges. The government emphasized that national unity and patriotism remain the only ways to protect the hard-won independence of the country.
