Warne’s Smart Deal Set to Earn Family Rs 460 Crore

Intro

Legendary spinner’s IPL equity stake turns into massive windfall after sale

New Delhi

Late Australian legend Shane Warne’s visionary deal with Rajasthan Royals is set to yield an estimated Rs 460 crore for his family following the franchise’s proposed sale, highlighting one of the most remarkable financial moves in Indian Premier League history.

The IPL franchise is reportedly being sold for $1.63 billion (around Rs 15,290 crore) to a US-based consortium led by Kal Somani, marking a massive jump in valuation since its inception. The deal, pending approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India, is expected to be completed after the 2026 IPL season.

Warne, who came out of retirement after Australia’s 2006–07 Ashes triumph, joined Rajasthan Royals in 2008 as captain, coach and mentor. Beyond his on-field leadership, he negotiated a unique contract that combined a fixed fee with long-term equity in the franchise.

As part of the agreement, Warne received $657,000 annually and a 0.75 per cent ownership stake for every season he played. Over four seasons, this accumulated to a 3 per cent stake in the franchise—an unconventional but ultimately lucrative decision.

At the time, the Royals were purchased for just $67 million by Emerging Media, led by Manoj Badale. By 2019, the franchise’s value had risen to around $400 million, with Warne himself acknowledging the growing worth of his stake.

However, the latest valuation of $1.63 billion has significantly amplified those returns. Warne’s 3 per cent share is now estimated to be worth between Rs 450 crore and Rs 460 crore, delivering exponential gains from his original agreement.

The move also underscores Warne’s influence beyond cricketing brilliance. Under his leadership, Rajasthan Royals clinched the inaugural IPL title in 2008 with a relatively inexperienced squad, cementing his legacy as both a tactician and innovator. This landmark deal not only reflects the soaring commercial success of the IPL but also stands as a testament to Warne’s foresight—ensuring his legacy continues to benefit his family years after his passing.
