Tiger Woods Returns, But LA Golf Club Clinch SoFi Cup in Style

Palm Beach Gardens

Tiger Woods made a long-awaited return to competitive action, but Los Angeles Golf Club dominated the final to secure a commanding victory and lift the SoFi Cup in the TGL Golf League.

Woods, representing Jupiter Links Golf Club, was playing his first match in over a year following multiple injuries, including back surgery. His comeback, however, could not prevent a 9-2 defeat as Los Angeles produced a stunning late surge, highlighted by three consecutive eagles that sealed the contest in emphatic fashion.

The 15-hole match ended early in just 10 holes, reflecting the dominance of the Los Angeles side. Woods showed glimpses of his class early on, helping Jupiter Links take a 2-0 lead with a steady birdie and a precise long putt that set up another scoring opportunity.

However, the turning point came when Woods missed a crucial short putt on the seventh hole, handing momentum to the opposition. From there, the tide shifted dramatically. Tommy Fleetwood sparked the comeback with a brilliant eagle, while teammates Sahith Theegala and Justin Rose capitalised on key moments to extend the lead.

Despite efforts from Jupiter Links players like Max Homa and Tom Kim, strategic missteps and missed chances proved costly. A failed “hammer” call—a rule that increases the value of a hole—further compounded their struggles as Los Angeles tightened their grip on the match.

For Woods, the result was secondary to his return. The 15-time major champion acknowledged frustration at the defeat but expressed satisfaction at being back on the course after a lengthy recovery from injuries, including an Achilles tendon rupture.

He remains uncertain about his participation in upcoming events, including the Masters, but reaffirmed his desire to continue competing. His performance, though limited, offered encouragement as he works his way back to full fitness.

Los Angeles Golf Club walked away with the $9 million prize, while Jupiter Links settled for $4.5 million. More importantly, the final marked another chapter in Woods’ enduring journey, as he continues his battle to return to top-level golf.
