Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday expressed strong confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party’s electoral prospects in lower Assam, citing a large public turnout at a campaign rally in Lumding as a sign of growing support.
He said the response reflected voter approval of the party’s governance over the past five years.
Addressing a public gathering in Lumding, Sarma said that people had turned out in large numbers to support BJP candidate Sibu Misra, indicating a positive mood among voters ahead of the Assembly elections. He stated that the party was seeking a fresh mandate based on its performance in the constituency and broader governance achievements across the state.
The people have come out in large numbers to bless our candidate for another victory. This support shows confidence in the work done over the last five years, Sarma said during his address. He added that the BJP remained optimistic about retaining the Lumding seat, which has been a stronghold of the party in recent elections.
Sibu Misra has a consistent electoral track record in the constituency. In the 2016 Assembly elections, he secured 72,072 votes and defeated his nearest Congress rival by a margin exceeding 30,000 votes. In the 2021 elections, Misra retained the seat with 89,108 votes, accounting for approximately 51 percent of the vote share, though the victory margin narrowed to 11,731 votes against Congress candidate Swapan Kar.
At the state level, the BJP has demonstrated steady electoral performance over the past two Assembly elections. The party secured around 60 seats in both 2016 and 2021, forming the government with the support of its allies under the Northeast Democratic Alliance. In 2021, the BJP-led alliance returned to power for a second consecutive term, further consolidating its political base in Assam.
With elections approaching, the BJP is focusing on its governance record and organisational strength to maintain its hold over key constituencies. Leaders like Sarma continue to emphasise local development and past achievements to strengthen voter support in areas such as Lumding.
