NEW DELHI
On the solemn occasion of Shaheed Diwas, Indian cricket icons Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan joined the nation in paying emotional tributes to freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru. The day marks the anniversary of their 1931 execution, a moment that forever changed the course of India’s struggle for independence.
Gautam Gambhir took to social media to praise the “fearless spirit” of Bhagat Singh, noting that even the threat of death could not make the revolutionary compromise his values. “That’s Sardar Bhagat Singh!” Gambhir wrote, calling him a timeless icon for every generation. Similarly, Shikhar Dhawan shared a heartfelt message in Hindi, stating that the courage and ultimate sacrifice of the three martyrs would continue to inspire the country forever.
History remembers these three heroes as members of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. They famously stood against British oppression following the death of leader Lala Lajpat Rai. Their bold actions, including the 1928 protest and throwing non-lethal bombs in the Central Assembly, were designed to wake up a sleeping nation. They believed their arrest and sacrifice would spark a massive fire of resistance against colonial rule.
These tributes from sporting legends reflect a deep national respect. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also joined in honoring the trio, ensuring their legacy of patriotism remains a guiding light. For millions of fans, seeing their cricket heroes pause to remember the past serves as a powerful reminder of the high price paid for India’s freedom.
