TVK rules out alliance with NDA ahead polls

Chennai

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, on Saturday rejected reports suggesting a possible alliance with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Tamil Nadu. Party leaders said the reports about a potential electoral pact were only media speculation and had no basis.

TVK Joint General Secretary C T R Nirmal Kumar said there was no possibility of an alliance with the NDA. He stated that the party had already declared the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its ideological opponent. Nirmal Kumar said rumours about negotiations were spreading through the media and social media, and party members should rely only on official announcements.

He clarified that a virtual meeting held with district secretaries on March 13 was meant to review the party’s organisational strength and discuss possible alliance strategies, not negotiations with the NDA. He also questioned whether the BJP would accept Vijay as the chief ministerial candidate if such rumours were true.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran avoided giving a clear answer when asked by reporters about talks with TVK. Instead, he said his focus was on issues affecting people, including law and order and the safety of women in the state.

According to sources in TVK, district secretaries told party General Secretary N Anand during the virtual meeting that the party’s chances of victory could improve if it contested elections with allies. However, the leadership has not announced any formal alliance plans.

The developments come as political parties in Tamil Nadu begin preparing strategies for the upcoming elections in the state.
