Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa ahead of her birth anniversary on February 24. Speaking during the 131st episode of Mann Ki Baat, he said she was a popular leader who always worked for public welfare.
The Prime Minister said Jayalalithaa, fondly called “Amma,” continues to live in the hearts of the people of Tamil Nadu. He recalled the affection and respect people still show for her during his visits to the state. He said she was committed to empowering women and introduced many welfare schemes for mothers, sisters and daughters. He also praised her efforts to maintain strict law and order in Tamil Nadu.
Modi described her as a proud Indian who strongly believed in the country’s cultural heritage. He said the spirit of patriotism was deeply rooted in her. Recalling their meetings, he said they often discussed good governance when both were serving as Chief Ministers. He remembered her attending his swearing-in ceremonies in Gujarat in 2002 and 2012 and also fondly mentioned a Pongal lunch she hosted in Chennai.
In the same programme, the Prime Minister also spoke about rising awareness of organ donation. He expressed grief over the death of 10-month-old Alin Sherin Abraham from Kerala, whose organs were donated to help others. He said losing a child is the greatest sorrow for any parent and praised families who choose organ donation to save lives.
