Kalaburagi
In a tragic incident reported from Kalaburagi city, two workers lost their lives due to alleged suffocation while cleaning a septic tank. The unfortunate incident took place at Madarasanahalli on Babalad Road, sending shockwaves through the local community.
The deceased have been identified as Ratan Hotakar and Shivakumar Nandurkar, both residents of Indiranagar in Kalaburagi. According to initial reports, the accident occurred at Ratan’s house located in the Hirapur area, where cleaning work of a septic tank was being carried out.
Police sources stated that Ratan first entered the septic tank to undertake the cleaning work. However, he reportedly slipped and fell inside the tank. Due to the presence of accumulated toxic gases within the confined space, he was quickly overcome by poisonous fumes. Upon noticing that Ratan was in distress, Shivakumar Nandurkar immediately rushed to rescue him. In an attempt to save his colleague, Shivakumar also entered the septic tank.
Unfortunately, the high concentration of hazardous gases inside the tank led to both men suffocating. They are believed to have died on the spot due to inhalation of toxic fumes before any immediate help could reach them. The incident highlights the grave dangers associated with manual septic tank cleaning, especially in the absence of proper safety equipment and precautionary measures.
Police Commissioner Sharanappa S.D. visited the site soon after the incident was reported. He inspected the spot and directed officials concerned to conduct a detailed inquiry into the circumstances that led to the tragedy. Authorities are examining whether adequate safety protocols were followed and if any negligence was involved.
The Ashok Nagar Police Station has registered a case of unnatural death in connection with the incident. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of death and determine accountability, if any.
