Veer Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj protected Indian art, literature and culture at a time when foreign powers were attacking the country, said Additional Deputy Commissioner B.C. Shivananda Murthy. He was speaking after inaugurating the Shivaji Jayanti programme at Nalwadi Shri Krishnaraja Wodeyar Kalamandir library hall on Wednesday. The event was organized jointly by the District Administration and the Kannada and Culture Department.

Shivananda Murthy said Shivaji Maharaj was born in 1630 in Maharashtra and was trained in warfare by Dadaji Kondadeva. From a young age, his mother Jijabai narrated stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, shaping his values of justice, courage and devotion.

He said Shivaji rose from humble beginnings and built a strong empire that safeguarded Indian traditions. By using clever guerrilla warfare strategies, he defeated powerful enemies and protected his people. His family later ruled for more than 250 years.

The ADC noted that Shivaji’s life teaches valuable lessons even today. Success can be achieved through loyalty, honesty and proper planning. He urged people, especially youth, to understand Shivaji’s ideals and follow them in daily life.

He added that Shivaji Jayanti is celebrated with pride and unity by the Maratha community and others across the country, as a tribute to a fearless leader who stood for culture and self-respect.

Several officials and community leaders, including Urban Development Authority Chairman Dr. P. Prakash and members of the Maratha Samaj, attended the programme.
