Blurb: Chief Minister unveils major initiatives to accelerate growth and strengthen infrastructure statewide.

Guwahati

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday made a series of key announcements in the Assam Legislative Assembly, outlining significant initiatives across the power, employment, investment and labour sectors.

The measures, revealed during the ongoing Budget Session, are aimed at accelerating the state’s economic growth and improving livelihoods.

Addressing the House, Sarma stated that the long-pending Kopili Hydro Electric Project will be completed within the next 10 days. The project is expected to generate 150 megawatts (MW) of electricity, providing a substantial boost to the state’s power supply. Additionally, repair and restoration work is underway to revive another 25 MW capacity at the Kopili plant.

The Chief Minister asserted that strengthening power infrastructure remains one of the government’s top priorities. He emphasised that ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply across Assam is crucial for industrial expansion, economic activities and improving the quality of life for citizens.

In a major push for employment generation, Sarma announced that the state government will provide 55,000 government jobs within the first three years of its current tenure. He clarified that the majority of these appointments will be made in the education department, underlining the administration’s focus on strengthening public education and addressing staff shortages in schools and institutions.

Highlighting Assam’s growing global investment appeal, the Chief Minister revealed that a delegation of 20 Japanese companies is scheduled to visit Jagiroad on February 28. The companies are expected to explore opportunities for establishing industrial units in the region.

Sarma expressed confidence that Jagiroad could emerge as a key industrial hub in the coming years. He noted that increased foreign investment would create employment opportunities for local youth and significantly boost the state’s manufacturing sector. The announcements signal the government’s broader strategy to combine infrastructure development, job creation and foreign investment to position Assam as a fast-growing economic centre in the Northeast.
