Filmmaker, wife released in Rs 30 crore fraud case.

New Delhi

The Supreme Court of India on Friday granted interim bail to Bollywood filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife Shwetambari in connection with an alleged Rs 30 crore fraud case. The couple had been arrested from their Mumbai residence on December 7, 2025, and subsequently brought to Rajasthan following a complaint lodged by a Udaipur-based doctor.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi directed the immediate release of the couple. The matter has been posted for further hearing on February 19.

The case stems from an FIR registered on November 17 at Bhupalpura police station in Udaipur based on a complaint by Dr Ajay Murdia, owner of the Indira Group and Indira IVF. The complainant alleged that Bhatt and eight others collected substantial funds under the pretext of producing a biopic based on his wife.

According to the complaint, Dr Murdia was introduced to the project by Dinesh Kataria and later met Bhatt at Vrindavan Studio in Mumbai. It is alleged that Bhatt assured him that an investment of Rs 7 crore could result in the production of four films with projected returns ranging between Rs 100 crore and Rs 200 crore.

Earlier, on January 31, the Rajasthan High Court had rejected the bail applications of Bhatt, his wife, and another accused, observing that granting bail at that stage would be inappropriate as the investigation was ongoing.

With the Supreme Court now granting interim relief, the legal proceedings will continue as investigators examine the financial transactions and claims made in the complaint.
