Spin-friendly Colombo conditions could shape India’s bowling combination on Sunday

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar expects wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav to replace pacer Arshdeep Singh in India’s playing XI for the high-voltage T20 World Cup clash against Pakistan on Sunday.

Arshdeep endured a tough outing against Namibia, conceding runs and failing to complete his full quota of four overs, though India registered a commanding 93-run victory to extend their winning streak. Gavaskar believes the team management’s bowling choices indicate a possible change for the marquee encounter in Colombo.

“All our bowlers picked up wickets. Arshdeep did not complete his four overs, while Shivam Dube bowled two and Hardik completed his quota. This hints that Kuldeep Yadav could replace Arshdeep against Pakistan,” Gavaskar said during an interaction.

He pointed out that Sri Lankan pitches traditionally favour spin and India have often opted for three spinners in such conditions. Gavaskar also observed that skipper Suryakumar Yadav appeared to rotate his bowlers with the Pakistan match in mind.

“Hardik bowling the first over suggests Arshdeep may not play the next match. Varun Chakaravarthy bowled only two overs and could have had five or six wickets if he completed his spell. Axar Patel’s two wickets in three overs is also a positive sign,” he added.

Gavaskar also assessed Sanju Samson’s brief but aggressive 22 off eight balls, noting that the batter’s tendency to move deep inside the crease exposes him to risk against the new ball. He advised Samson to spend more time at the crease if selected against Pakistan.
