Former Member of Parliament Ugrappa has urged the government to enhance Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) reservation in proportion to their population, asserting that social justice cannot be achieved without equitable representation. He made this demand while addressing a gathering in the city on Monday, highlighting long-pending concerns of marginalised communities.

Speaking to the public, Ugrappa said that despite constitutional safeguards, SC and ST communities continue to face social, economic, and educational disadvantages. He argued that reservation policies must reflect current population data rather than outdated figures, so that benefits reach those who are still deprived of equal opportunities. Reservation is not charity; it is a constitutional right meant to correct historical injustice, he stated.

The former MP pointed out that population growth among SC–ST communities has not been matched with a corresponding increase in reservation in education, employment, and political representation. As a result, many eligible candidates are denied opportunities, he said. Ugrappa stressed that proportional reservation would strengthen inclusive development and ensure fair participation of marginalised sections in nation-building.

He also criticised what he described as attempts to dilute reservation policies and divert attention from core issues affecting Dalits and Adivasis. Ugrappa warned that weakening reservation would further widen social inequality and undermine the spirit of the Constitution framed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Addressing youth from SC–ST communities, he encouraged them to stay united, pursue education, and actively participate in democratic movements to safeguard their rights. He said awareness and collective action are essential to pressurise governments into implementing progressive and just policies.

Several social activists and community leaders present at the event echoed Ugrappa’s views, calling for an updated caste census to accurately assess population figures. They demanded immediate steps to revise reservation limits based on scientific data and constitutional principles.

The programme concluded with a call for sustained democratic struggle to ensure social justice. Participants reiterated that increasing SC–ST reservation in line with population is crucial for achieving equality, dignity, and inclusive growth in society.
