Two-time Indian Super League champions Chennaiyin FC have strengthened their backline with the signing of Brazilian defender Eduardo Kau, as the Marina Machans continue to fine-tune their squad ahead of the new season starting February 14.

The 27-year-old has signed a contract until the end of the campaign and becomes Chennaiyin’s fifth new recruit in the current transfer window. A left-footed centre-back, Kau brings both physical presence and tactical flexibility to the side. Standing at 6’3”, the Brasilia-born defender is dominant in aerial duels and strong in one-on-one situations, while also capable of slotting in as a left-back when required.

Kau’s profile fits the modern defender mould. Comfortable on the ball, he is known for carrying possession out of defence, breaking opposition lines with accurate forward passes and switching play with well-weighted long balls. His composure under pressure is expected to add stability to Chennaiyin’s build-up play from the back.

Head coach Clifford Miranda expressed satisfaction at the club securing the Brazilian’s services, stressing the balance Kau brings to the defensive unit. “We’re happy Eduardo has joined us. He’s calm on the ball and very comfortable under pressure. Along with Elsinho, he will help us shore up our defence and initiate attacks from the back. His leadership qualities will also be important in controlling the game,” Miranda said.

Kau began his professional career with Avaí in Brazil before moving to Europe, where he featured in Portugal’s top division with B-SAD. He has since gathered valuable international experience across Moldova, Indonesia, Malta and Thailand, adapting to different playing styles and tactical demands.

His arrival also extends Chennaiyin FC’s long-standing association with Brazilian footballers, a tradition that has brought flair and steel to the club over the years. Kau joins recent signings Imran Khan and Alberto Noguera as Chennaiyin aim to assemble a balanced, competitive squad for the upcoming ISL season.
