Former Minister alleges politics over flood control

Intro

Munenakoppa said the BJP identified flood-affected villages and discussed permanent relocation and rehabilitation plans while in power

A political fight has started over flood prevention work in the Bennehalla and Thupparihalla streams, with former minister Munenakoppa accusing the Congress government of using the issue only for publicity.

Speaking to media persons, he said people in flood-prone districts like Haveri, Gadag, and Dharwad suffer every monsoon as water overflows from these canals. He claimed earlier governments did not have a clear, long-term maintenance plan for the 141-kilometre stretch between Shiggaon and Menasagi.

Munenakoppa said that when the BJP was in power, steps were taken to find a permanent solution. He stated that villages affected by floods were identified and plans were discussed for relocation and rehabilitation where necessary.

He also recalled that an expert committee led by irrigation specialist G.S. Paramashivayya had been appointed to study the problem. According to him, the report suggested stopping excess flow, storing water, and using it later for drinking and farming needs.

The former minister alleged that several technical studies, including drone surveys, were carried out during the BJP rule. However, he accused the current Congress leaders of claiming credit and misleading the public.

He further said the total estimated cost of the Bennehalla project is around Rs 1,610 crore, but only about Rs 200 crore has been spent so far. He claimed the work is being done without proper planning.

Munenakoppa said he would write to the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, urging them to complete the projects fully and provide lasting relief to people facing floods every year. He demanded transparency, regular updates, and strict monitoring to ensure public money is used properly and quickly.
