Savita community seeks law against caste abuse

GADAG

A strong demand for a special law to stop caste-based insults against the Savita community was raised during Savita Maharshi Jayanti celebrations in Gadag. Krishna H. Hadapada, District President of Gadag District Savita Samaj, urged the government to act quickly and bring legal protection against the misuse of abusive words targeting the community.

Speaking at the programme organised jointly by the district administration, the Kannada and Culture Department, and the Savita Samaj, he said no one chooses their caste at birth and discrimination based on traditional occupations must end. He stressed that a law does not need large funds, only the will to ensure justice and equality. He welcomed the assurance of Minister Shivaraj Thangadgi that the issue would be discussed with the Chief Minister.

Hadapada also submitted a petition listing community demands. These included setting up shelter homes for poor families, providing 200 free salon chairs to support livelihoods, releasing funds for a temple at Gangimadi, and naming a circle after Sant Sena Maharaja. Leaders requested a meeting with Law Minister H.K. Patil to press for a legal framework against verbal abuse.

MLA Krishnagouda Patil said efforts would be made step by step to meet the demands and promised to arrange discussions in Bengaluru. District Magistrate C.N. Sridhar said he would review the requests and support lawful measures to protect dignity and equality.

Community leaders called for unity, education, and social progress, saying respect and equal rights are essential for a just society. Hundreds of members and leaders attended and expressed hope for early government action.
