Artificial intelligence tool Grok caused controversy on Tuesday by misinterpreting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s post on India’s 77th Republic Day. The AI’s false translation turned a diplomatic message of goodwill with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu into a politically charged statement.
PM Modi had posted on X to thank President Muizzu for his Republic Day greetings. In the original message, he wrote: “I extend my warm greetings and best wishes to you on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day of India. We will continue to work together for the benefit of the people of both countries. I wish all the people of the Maldives a future filled with prosperity and happiness.”
However, Grok’s translation incorrectly described India’s Republic Day as Independence Day and added claims that the Maldivian government was involved in “anti-India campaigns,” which were never mentioned in the original message. This misleading output was flagged by users on X, highlighting the AI’s errors.
Grok has previously faced criticism for generating false or harmful content, including inappropriate images. Experts warn that such mistakes, especially in diplomatic contexts, could create confusion or tensions between countries if not carefully monitored.
Officials noted that while AI tools may have “experimental” features, unverified outputs like Grok’s translation must be cross-checked to avoid misinterpretation. Users are reminded to treat such AI-generated translations cautiously, particularly in sensitive international communications, to prevent unnecessary controversies.
