School Education and District In-charge Minister S Madhu Bangarappa on Sunday launched the “Crafts of Malnad” website and called upon people to support local artisans by buying handmade products.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the Malnad Handicrafts Festival, Siridhanya Mela and Pushpasiri, the 63rd fruit and flower exhibition, held at Allama Prabhu Maidan in the city. The four-day event is jointly organised by the Zilla Panchayat, Horticulture Department and District Garden Art Association.

The minister said traditional arts reflect the culture and identity of the region and must be passed on to the next generation. He added that the government is thinking about introducing local art forms at the school level so children can learn and value their heritage from a young age.

The exhibition features handicrafts made by women from self-help groups, handloom sarees, food products made from millets, fruits, vegetables, and farm produce from different districts and states. Many visitors were seen appreciating the colourful displays and creative work of rural artisans.

Bangarappa said products made by women’s self-help groups under the brand “Crafts of Malnad” have now been given an online platform to reach more customers. He suggested using short videos and QR codes to promote the website and said a state-level exhibition should also be held to popularise these crafts further.

He urged the public to visit the fair, buy local products and encourage artisans and women entrepreneurs. Several officials and public representatives were present during the launch ceremony. Organisers said the event also helps farmers, artists, and small producers find better markets and steady income opportunities across the Malnad region.
