Flames of Faith

Mysore

Centuries-old traditions were vividly celebrated at Hampapura village in Srirangapatna taluk of Mysuru district, as the festival of Makara Sankranti was observed with the striking ritual of cattle traversing burning haystacks. Deeply embedded in rural customs, this belief suggests that leading cows and bullocks over flames dispels malevolent spirits and promotes prosperity. The cattle, adorned in bright yellow turmeric shades and embellished with flowers and colorful balloons, were first honored with worship before they made the fiery leap. This year, a unique and delightful addition to the ceremony was the participation of sheep, symbolizing unity and shared faith. The radiant flames, festive chants, and sacred devotion painted a timeless rural spectacle. | Hampa Nagaraju
