MLA H.C. Balakrishna apologises to Magadi Tahsildar Sharath Kumar for controversial “slippers” remark during public grievance meeting

MLA H.C. Balakrishna, who recently sparked controversy by stating that he would have the Magadi Tahsildar beaten with slippers by the public if he failed to perform his duties, has now apologised to Tahsildar Sharath Kumar. The MLA had earlier reprimanded the official during a public grievance meeting, warning him in harsh language, which invited widespread criticism.
Participating in a taluk-level government employees’ sports meet on Sunday, where the Tahsildar was also present, Balakrishna clarified that his remarks were made in colloquial “village language” without the intention to hurt anyone. He said he had brought the officer to the taluk to serve the people without expecting any personal favour, but expressed frustration when farmers’ grievances remained unresolved. “If my words have hurt you, I apologise. My only concern is justice for the people. When people are unhappy, they blame me, not the officers,” he said.
The MLA further questioned corruption in administration, asking how farmers could be expected to pay bribes with their hard-earned money. Recalling the respect late IAS officer D.K. Ravi commanded, he lamented that honest officers have become rare today. He stressed that he never demands money from anyone and his only aim is to ensure justice for his constituency.
Balakrishna reiterated that he did not intend to insult officials but spoke out of pain and concern for the public. “If officers work sincerely, I will respect them immensely,” he added, emphasising that his remarks were situational rather than personal.
