CM Siddaramaiah Announces Special Law to Curb Honour Killings

CM Siddaramaiah said that a special law will be formulated to control honour killings

BENGALURU

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced on social media X that his government will formulate a special law to prevent honour killings and related caste-based violence.

“Our top priority is to ensure a speedy trial in the dishonourable murder of Manya from Inam Veerapur in Hubballi taluk and provide justice to the victims. A fast-track court will be established for this purpose,” Siddaramaiah wrote.

He added that a case of atrocities and murder against Dalits has already been registered, and since it falls under atrocity laws, a chargesheet must be filed within 60 days. Steps have been taken to appoint a private prosecutor to expedite proceedings.

“Incidents like forcing a girl into marriage against her will, caste-based violence, assault, and honour killings are heinous acts that disgrace society. Our government will not tolerate such crimes,” he said.

The Chief Minister further stated that the special law will curb future incidents and raise public awareness about legal consequences. He said the proposal will be discussed in the upcoming legislative session for appropriate action.

Meanwhile, the opposition BJP questioned the need for a separate law. BJP MP Govind Karjol, during a visit to Inam Veerapur, the village of the deceased Manya Doddamani, said, “Many laws already exist to prevent atrocities against Dalits. The government must ensure their implementation. Passing another law will not help unless strict punishments are enforced.”

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, echoed the view, emphasizing that effective enforcement of existing laws is more important than introducing new legislation.

The announcement comes amid growing public demand for stringent measures to prevent caste-based honour killings and ensure justice for victims in Karnataka.
