Jaishankar’s Dhaka Visit Signals Restoring India-Bangladesh Ties

New Delhi

Former diplomat Suresh K Goel on Thursday said External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Dhaka for former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s funeral is a key step towards normalising India-Bangladesh political dialogue. Goel noted that while the visit may appear as protocol, it carries deeper significance given Zia’s role in Bangladesh’s political history and India’s past engagement with her government.

Goel highlighted that India and Bangladesh previously shared a “pleasant and effective relationship,” which periodic irritants had strained. He said Jaishankar’s remarks during the visit, expressing hope that Zia’s vision continues to guide bilateral relations, reflected New Delhi’s intent to rebuild a stable and constructive partnership. “We are talking about really establishing a normal political regime and dialogue between the two countries,” he said.

Referring to recent political developments following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina, Goel said engagement has become difficult due to rising violence and jihadist influence. He stressed the importance of restoring a political government through free and fair elections and ensuring the safety of all citizens, including people of Indian origin.

During his four-hour visit, Jaishankar met Khaleda Zia’s son and BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, handing over a condolence letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Goel said the gesture underscores India’s recognition of Zia’s contributions to Bangladesh’s democratic journey and signals optimism for future bilateral ties. India hopes that after the upcoming elections, scheduled for February 12, relations with Bangladesh will strengthen, enabling cooperation in mutual interest and regional stability.
