Ukraine’s leader shared details of talks with Donald Trump, pushing for lasting security guarantees for Ukraine
Washington
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that United States President Donald Trump briefed him on a twenty-point peace proposal discussed earlier with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He spoke after meeting Trump at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, December twenty-eight, where both leaders talked about ways to end the war that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion and is nearing four years.
Zelenskyy said he asked for firm security guarantees lasting fifty years and stressed that any talks with Moscow would happen only after Trump and European leaders agreed on clear written commitments. Trump said he also held a long phone call with Putin, describing it as productive and friendly, as the conflict approaches its fourth anniversary on February twenty-four.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine wants national security advisers from Ukraine, the United States and Europe to meet soon to shape the plan and timelines. He added that guarantees should begin the moment a final agreement is signed by all sides. He said the plan should carry signatures from Ukraine, the United States, Russia and Europe, and may need a technical group to manage steps and checks.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine is open to talks with Russia and suggested a national referendum after a ceasefire of at least sixty days. He said monitoring rules would be part of the guarantees, and talks would also cover plans for a free economic zone in the Donbas region.
Speaking later, Trump called Zelenskyy brave and said Putin wants the war to end, adding he prefers a deal without travel, while saying peace efforts must move fast and carefully. Officials said more details are expected soon as talks continue amid heavy fighting and humanitarian pressure across eastern Ukraine.
