In a decisive act of vigilance, members of the public rescued 14 calves that were being illegally transported to a slaughterhouse in neighbouring Tamil Nadu near Hunasepalya village in Hanur. The timely intervention by villagers prevented the animals from being taken across state borders and underscored the role of community participation in curbing illegal livestock movement.
According to police sources, locals received information that a Bolero goods vehicle was carrying calves without valid permits and was headed towards Tamil Nadu. Acting immediately, residents of Hunasepalya blocked the vehicle on the road, safely rescued the animals, and alerted the police. The calves, described as mute animals by witnesses, were reportedly being transported in violation of livestock transport and animal welfare regulations.
Upon receiving the alert, a police team led by PSI Manjunath Prasad rushed to the spot under the guidance of Anandamurthy, Inspector of Hanur Police Station. The officers seized the Bolero vehicle and took custody of all 14 calves. Preliminary checks indicated the absence of mandatory documents such as transport permits, veterinary certificates, and destination authorization—requirements essential for lawful animal transport.
Police officials stated that a case has been registered under relevant sections of animal welfare and transport laws, and further investigation is underway to identify the source of the animals, the intended destination, and those involved in the illegal operation. The seized vehicle has been impounded, and statements from witnesses are being recorded.
The rescued calves were handed over to the police and arrangements were initiated to move them to a safe shelter, where they would receive veterinary examination, food, and care. Authorities said the animals would be produced before the competent authority as per procedure and later rehabilitated in accordance with the law.
Residents lauded the swift response by the police and reiterated their commitment to preventing cruelty and illegal trade. Community leaders noted that such incidents have been reported intermittently along border routes and called for enhanced night patrols, checkpoints, and awareness drives to deter offenders.
