The deepfake fever that has been plaguing actors and actresses has now reached President Droupadi Murmu
BENGALURU
An FIR has been registered at the city’s Mahalaxmi Layout police station against the person and social media account who made a ‘deepfake’ video in Murmu’s name.
The case was registered on the complaint of social media in-charge PSI Rakesh. Recently, a deepfake video was also leaked in the name of Rajya Sabha member Sudha Murthy regarding investment.
While checking Facebook accounts in the social media department of Mahalakshmi Layout Police on December 5, a video of President Draupadi Murmu addressing the central government’s financial scheme was shared on the ‘Done Dreams’ account. The video posted on the page also provided a link below, falsely advertising that people can earn more by investing money and sitting at home without working.
When the matter was brought to the notice of the city police commissioner and a preliminary investigation was conducted, it was revealed that the video of the President’s speech was deepfaked using AI technology.
A case has been registered against an unknown person and the social media account holder on December 12 under Sections 318(4), 336(4) of the BNS Act 2023 for spreading false information, extorting money from the public and causing financial loss.
It is an old idea to attach someone’s head to someone’s body using a photo editing tool. When looking at these photos, there is a little suspicion. But in deepfake technology, not a photo, but a video is created so that there is no suspicion. The video is so realistic that it seems to have a direct connection to the person’s body and face. Even though the original video is different, it is portrayed as if this person is acting in the video.
