Idol of Malatesh Devara vandalised near Gundenahalli

An incident of vandalism involving the idol of Malatesh Devara has been reported near Gundenahalli village in Byadagi taluk of Haveri district, causing outrage and distress among local residents. The incident came to light on Thursday, when devotees and villagers noticed damage to the revered idol, which holds religious and cultural significance for the local community.

According to preliminary information, unidentified miscreants allegedly smashed the idol using a stone. The face and eye area of the Malatesh Devara idol were severely damaged in the act, leading to strong resentment among devotees. The idol is located in an open area near the village and is regularly worshipped by people from Gundenahalli and surrounding villages.

As news of the vandalism spread, local residents gathered at the site and expressed anger against those responsible for the act. Many villagers described the incident as an attack on religious sentiments and demanded immediate action against the culprits. Tension prevailed in the area for some time, though the situation remained under control.

The Byadagi police were informed soon after the incident and reached the spot to assess the damage and gather details. Police officials conducted an initial inspection of the site and spoke to villagers to understand the sequence of events. Based on the complaint lodged by locals, a case has been registered under the jurisdiction of the Byadagi police station against unknown persons.

Police sources said that efforts are underway to identify the miscreants involved in the vandalism. CCTV footage from nearby areas, if available, is being examined, and local residents are being questioned as part of the investigation. Additional patrols have also been deployed in and around the village to prevent any further incidents and to maintain law and order.

Community leaders and elders have appealed to the public to remain calm and cooperate with the police during the investigation. They emphasised that such acts should be dealt with strictly through legal means and urged authorities to ensure swift justice.
