In a shocking incident that has come to light belatedly, a man allegedly attempted to murder his wife and her family members by pouring petrol and setting them on fire in Telasang village of Athani taluk. The incident reportedly took place on December 10, following prolonged domestic disputes between the couple.
According to police sources, the woman had left her husband’s house after repeated quarrels and had gone to stay at her parental home in Telasang village. Angered by her decision and ongoing family tensions, the husband allegedly went to her parents’ house, where he confronted his wife and her family members. During the confrontation, he is said to have poured petrol on them and set them ablaze with the intention of killing them.
The sudden act created panic in the household and surrounding area. Hearing the screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and managed to douse the fire, preventing further loss of life. The injured victims were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Doctors said they sustained burn injuries and are currently undergoing medical care. Their condition is reported to be stable, though they remain under observation.
The incident surfaced after local residents informed the police, following which a case was registered. Police officials have launched an investigation into the matter and are recording statements from the victims, eyewitnesses, and neighbours to ascertain the exact sequence of events. Preliminary findings suggest that domestic discord and anger over the wife leaving the marital home were the main reasons behind the attack.
The accused husband is said to be absconding since the incident, and police teams have been formed to trace and arrest him at the earliest. Authorities have assured strict action against the accused under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including attempt to murder.
