Veteran Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit reflected on how filmmaking and direction have evolved from her debut film Abodh to her upcoming drama Mrs Deshpande, Dixit noted that the film industry has become far more organized over the years, providing actors with better preparation and comfort on set.
Recalling her early days, Dixit explained that during the 1980s and 1990s, only a few producers like Yash Chopra, B. R. Chopra, Subhash Ghai, and Rajshri Productions maintained structured setups. Other productions relied heavily on spontaneity, often leaving actors to shoot under harsh conditions. Today, she said, actors receive scripts well in advance, with facilities such as RVs to rest between takes and detailed planning for costumes and looks.
Dixit emphasized the importance of preparation, with rehearsals and readings now becoming common, ensuring actors understand their roles thoroughly before filming. “Back then, we used to sit under the sun with an umbrella over our heads,” she recalled humorously, highlighting the contrast to today’s organized sets.
The Hum Aapke Hain Koun star also explained her selective approach to acting these days. She chooses projects that excite her and offer meaningful roles. Dixit said she seeks characters that make her eager to start work every day, collaborating with filmmakers who bring depth and justice to their stories.
With nearly four decades in the industry, Dixit continues to inspire audiences not only with her performances but also with her thoughtful approach to cinema, blending experience, passion, and a clear sense of purpose in choosing her projects.
