Nupi Lal Tribute
Imphal
President Droupadi Murmu, currently on a two-day visit to Manipur, paid floral tributes at the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex in Imphal on Friday to mark the 86th Nupi Lal Day. The day commemorates two historic women-led uprisings against British policies in 1904 and 1939, movements that remain significant milestones in the state’s socio-political history.
The President also visited the Shree Govindaji Temple at the Palace Compound, located about two kilometres from the memorial site, where she offered prayers. An official accompanying the visit said President Murmu’s tribute was a heartfelt homage to the brave women of Manipur whose courage and resilience continue to inspire generations.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who joined the President at the memorial, also offered floral tributes. In his message to the people of Manipur, the Governor described Nupi Lal Day—popularly known as Nupilan Numit—as a powerful reminder of the extraordinary unity and patriotism shown by Manipuri women. He highlighted that the Nupi Lal movements stood not just as protests but as powerful expressions of collective leadership and social awareness.
The brave mothers of Manipur transformed their pain into courage that culminated in a movement that continues to inspire generations. Their sacrifices remind us that the progress of any society lies in respecting and empowering its women, Bhalla said.
The Governor called upon citizens to uphold the spirit of Nupi Lal and work towards fostering peace, harmony and progress in the state.
Following the tribute ceremony, President Murmu departed Imphal for Senapati district, a Naga tribal-inhabited region, where she is scheduled to address a public function and inaugurate and lay foundation stones for several developmental projects. This marks her first visit to Manipur since assuming office, and it comes at a time when the state continues to recover from ethnic violence.
