Hong Kong aims to conclude fire probe quickly

Independent Inquiry Launched

Hong Kong

Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said on Friday that the government aims to complete an independent investigation into the deadly fire that killed at least 160 people within nine months. The blaze, which broke out on November 26, swept through seven high-rise residential towers in the Tai Po district, displacing thousands and raising urgent questions about building safety.

An independent committee, led by Judge David Lok of the Electoral Affairs Commission, has been tasked with examining the causes of the tragedy. The inquiry will focus on whether systemic issues exist in the construction industry, including conflicts of interest, collusion, or bid-rigging in awarding contracts. Lee praised the committee members for their dedication, saying, “They all have the passion and the love of Hong Kong… I take my hat off to them.”

Residents have expressed anger over the fire, which took nearly two days to control. Authorities have pointed to substandard building materials used in renovations as a key factor in the fire’s rapid spread. In response, the government has launched criminal and corruption investigations, signaling a broader effort to hold responsible parties accountable.

Lee also said that lawmakers and officials will work together to implement institutional reforms in the construction sector. Public petitions and calls for improved oversight have underscored the need for stronger safety regulations and government accountability. The government’s swift action aims to restore confidence while ensuring that lessons are learned from the disaster.

The fire has left a lasting mark on Hong Kong, and authorities face pressure to prevent similar tragedies in the future through better safety standards, stricter regulations, and transparent investigations. The nine-month timeline is seen as a key step toward closure for affected families and residents.
