India will continue purchasing energy resources wherever it finds them economically advantageous, Dmitry Peskov, Press Secretary to Russian President Vladimir Putin, reaffirmed on Monday. Speaking in Moscow, Peskov called Putin’s recent state visit to India “very successful” and said New Delhi’s policy reflects its sovereign right to protect national economic interests.
The statement follows Putin’s two-day visit to India last week, during which he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi for extensive talks at Hyderabad House as part of the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. The leaders discussed all aspects of bilateral relations, including politics, security, trade, economics, and cultural cooperation.
Putin emphasized that Russia remains a reliable energy supplier and will ensure “uninterrupted fuel supplies” for India’s growing economy. He highlighted the growing use of national currencies in bilateral trade, noting that 96 per cent of transactions now involve the Russian ruble or Indian rupee. Large joint projects are increasingly financed in rubles, reflecting deepening financial and energy cooperation.
Both leaders witnessed the signing of multiple agreements, including Memorandums of Understanding on trade and commerce, maritime cooperation, migration and mobility, health and food safety, fertilizers, academic exchanges, media cooperation, and people-to-people ties. Putin noted that these steps strengthen the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” and support sustainable, long-term cooperation.
Peskov underlined that India’s energy policy is guided by economic considerations and that Russia expects New Delhi to continue sourcing fuel where it is beneficial. The statement signals continuity in India-Russia energy relations and reassures Moscow of its role as a key partner in meeting India’s growing energy demands.
