Rashmika Mandanna’s much-talked-about romantic drama The Girlfriend has now made its digital debut on Netflix, following a successful run in theatres. As the film began streaming online from December 5, the actress reached out to her fans with a heartfelt note, thanking them for the love they showered on the film during its theatrical release and encouraging them to continue their support on OTT.
Taking to her Instagram stories, Rashmika shared the official poster of the film and wrote that she hoped viewers would keep giving the film the same affection it received in cinemas. She urged those who had missed it on the big screen to watch it online and share their honest feedback with her. Netflix also promoted the release by introducing her character Bhooma Devi, described as an MA Literature student.
Written and directed by Rahul Ravindran, The Girlfriend follows the story of Bhooma, a postgraduate student who falls for Vikram, played by Dheekshith Shetty. What begins as a charming romance soon turns into an emotionally manipulative and toxic relationship, highlighting the darker side of love. The film has been widely praised for its realistic portrayal of emotional abuse and the harsh realities many women silently endure.
Rashmika’s performance has received special appreciation from both critics and audiences. The supporting cast includes Anu Emmanuel and Rao Ramesh in key roles. Released in multiple languages including Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam, the film earned Rs 18.67 crore in India and went on to collect Rs 29.07 crore worldwide. With its OTT release, the makers hope the story will now reach an even wider audience.
